DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to address some of the difficulties students often encounter when communicating in English during their studies at undergraduate level. It also aims to familiarise and equip them with the necessary tools to consolidate and improve their competence in English language. This will be achieved through added exposure to English and greater self-awareness in students' use of English.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To consolidate and improve students’ accuracy, appropriacy and fluency in written and spoken production;
- To provide students with the necessary language tools for becoming autonomous learners, able to identify their linguistic weaknesses and analyse their own production independently.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- demonstrate an awareness of the accurate and appropriate use of a relatively broad range of vocabulary;
- demonstrate an awareness of the accurate use of a range of sentences;
- understand a range of speech patterns that contribute to fluency;
- identify basic organisational strategies in written and spoken production;
- engage with a selection of text types;
- use basic organisational strategies in written and spoken production;
- identify the correct use of punctuation in writing;
- identify the function of topic sentences;
- identify and correct errors in their own written and spoken production.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- use a relatively broad range of vocabulary in written and spoken production;
- use a range of sentence structures in written production;
- use basic signposting appropriately in written and spoken production;
- use a range of language features to converse more comfortably in English;
- punctuate accurately and effectively;
- engage in note-taking for different purposes;
- practise summarising within a controlled setting;
- use topic sentences;
- use cohesive devices to link ideas within and between sentences and paragraphs;
- analyse, evaluate and edit own written production with a limited focus;
- use self-study resources.
