DESCRIPTION This study-unit equips students with a solid understanding of the core theoretical and practical issues related to leadership and management in the field of TESOL. Students will be able to examine the implications of current research on leadership and management in TESOL, apply research findings to workplace practice, and consider how to enhance the operations of language schools and other TESOL organisations through evidence-based practices. This study-unit provides students with the opportunity to explore ways of developing their knowledge and skills by engaging with the key issues that leaders in the TESOL sector deal with on a regular basis, including business planning and strategy, organisational performance, entrepreneurship, human resource management, and language school marketing. Students will be encouraged to apply their learning to a variety of organisations in the international TESOL context.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide students with an understanding of the key theoretical and practical issues related to leadership and management in TESOL;
- To enable students to examine the implications of current research on leadership and management in TESOL;
- To enable students to apply the findings of research on leadership and management in TESOL to workplace practice;
- To guide students to explore ways of enhancing the operations of language schools and other TESOL organisations through evidence-based practices;
- To guide students to examine the key issues that leaders in the TESOL sector deal with on a regular basis, including business planning and strategy, organisational performance, entrepreneurship, human resource management, and school marketing; and
- To guide students to apply their learning about leadership and management to a variety of organisations in the international TESOL context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the key theoretical and practical issues in relation to leadership and management in TESOL;
- Identify the implications of current research on leadership and management in TESOL;
- Distinguish between leadership and management;
- Describe the foundational tenets and practices underpinning business planning and strategy, organisational performance, entrepreneurship, human resource management, and school marketing;
- Describe ways of enhancing the operations of language schools and other TESOL organisations through evidence-based practices.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be a ble to:

- Engage critically with the scholarly literature on leadership and management in TESOL;
- Compare and contrast different theories and research findings, methods and approaches related to leadership and management in TESOL;
- Analyse and evaluate different leadership styles and management practices in TESOL;
- Apply their knowledge of theory and research on leadership and management in TESOL to workplace practice;
- Apply their knowledge of the foundational tenets and practices underpinning business planning and strategy, organisational performance, entrepreneurship, human resource management, and school marketing to case studies of international TESOL organisations;
- Design a business plan, organisational strategy, marketing plan or other relevant materials for enhancing language school operations and present them to peers in a workshop;
- Write critically and engagingly about theoretical, research and practical issues related to leadership and management in TESOL;
- Summarise and critique theoretical, research and practical issues in spoken and written forms.
