DESCRIPTION This study-unit equips students with a solid understanding of the core theoretical and practical issues related to the learning of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Students will be able to examine a range of methods and approaches that have been devised in order to facilitate the process of mastering a broad range of ESPs, including the use of English for Aviation, Healthcare, Business, and Law Enforcement. Students will be able to examine the implications of current applied linguistics research on ESP, apply research findings to classroom practice, and consider how to design, deliver and evaluate ESP programmes of learning. Students will be encouraged to apply this knowledge to a variety of ESP contexts, learners, and professional development and action research projects.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To provide students with an understanding of the key theoretical and practical issues related to the learning of English for Specific Purposes (ESP);
- To introduce students to language analysis for determining grammatical and lexical aspects typical of ESP;
- To enable students to examine a range of methods and approaches that have been devised in order to facilitate the process of mastering a broad range of ESPs;
- To equip students with the necessary skills to use corpus linguistics in the design of ESP courses and materials;
- To enable students to apply the findings of applied linguistics research on ESP to classroom practice; and
- To guide students to consider how to design, deliver and evaluate ESP programmes of learning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the key theoretical and practical issues in relation to the learning of English for Specific Purposes (ESP);
- Distinguish between ESP and General English;
- Describe a range of methods and approaches that have been devised in order to facilitate the process of mastering a broad range of ESPs;
- Identify the implications of applied linguistics research on ESP domains, contexts and learners.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse and evaluate research related to English for Specific Purposes (ESP);
- Compare and contrast different theories and research findings, methods and approaches related to ESP;
- Conduct a needs analysis in order to design appropriate ESP courses;
- Design samples of teaching material for class and group discussion with peers;
- Evaluate ESP programmes of learning;
- Write critically and engagingly about theoretical, research and practical issues related to ESP;
- Analyse existing course material according to specific professional and cultural situations;
- Engage in independent study.

Note: All texts are/will be available through the library or as part of the lecturers' resources. Students will be given a comprehensive study pack at the start of the study-unit.
