DESCRIPTION This study-unit will explore the role of businesses in safeguarding the environment. It introduces the general issues and context as well as providing an overview of the various tools and approaches relevant to private-sector environmental management, including but not limited to Environmental Management Systems (EMS), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Reference will be made to relevant ISO standards, Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle as well as the importance of the environmental policy and continuous environmental improvement.

In the context of environmental management, emphasis will be placed on local business scenarios. Furthermore, the strengths and limitations of the different tools described in this study-unit will be discussed.

Selected case studies will highlight specific issues related to corporate environmental management. Fieldwork sessions will be used to illustrate and evaluate relevant themes in a local context.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims:

- To familiarize students with a range of tools used for environmental management purposes;
- To enable students to understand the way in which corporate environmental management is undertaken, and to comprehend the various stages of the PDCA process;
- To enable students to understand the various ways in which certification (ISO and EMAS) can be implemented within private-sector organizations, with reference to practical examples;
- Introduce principles and techniques for environmental management, monitoring and assessment;
- To provide students with on-site visits to better understand the realities related to the implementation of environmental management in the local context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the process through which an organization's environmental policy is development and implemented;
- Explain the stages involved in the development and implementation of an Environmental Management System;
- Explain the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility;
- Explain the concept of Life Cycle Assessment;
- Recognize the key issues related to EMS within a local context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognize and identify the different stages of the Environmental Management System;
- Critically appraise the environmental management structures of private-sector organizations;
- Critically appraise the two main types of environmental management certifications available for organizations;
- Discuss the costs and benefits of environmental management systems for private-sector organizations.
