| DESCRIPTION | The purpose of this study-unit is to introduce students to the social and literary contexts of early Tudor Drama and to critical reception of the rise of a great dramatic and artistic tradition. The study-unit surveys extant Mystery and Morality plays in England and in Europe and reserves Everyman for detailed study. It examines the growth of drama during the Tudor period and concentrates more particularly on issues involving authorial intention, political and religious orthodoxy, transgression and retribution, and language and imagery in three of the following plays by Christopher Marlowe: Tamburlaine I and II; Dr. Faustus; Edward I; The Jew of Malta.
