| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to some of the basic tenets of modern and contemporary literary theory. In particular the unit will focus on Russian Formalism (Shklovsky), Structuralism (Propp), Bakhtin (Literary Poetics), Barthes (Post Structuralism) and the notion of Intertextuality. The study-unit will enable students to come to grips with new ways of engaging with literary texts. The notion of authorship will also be discussed. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of Modern and Contemporary literary theory. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit the student will be able to come to grips with modern theoretical approaches and to apply these to literary texts, where relevant. It will acquaint them with new ways of seeing literature and of challenging common sense assumptions about value-judgments.
