DESCRIPTION Students will learn about complex notions in the theoretical approaches of morphology and syntax, and they will be able to apply their understanding to the study of English word and sentence structure in spoken and written form.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students to a greater depth of study of the theories and formal representations of syntax and morphology;
- To familiarise students with the terminology and descriptive frameworks used in the analysis of structure at word level (morphology) and sentence level (syntax);
- To encourage students to apply the above frameworks, tools and terminology to the analysis of spoken and written English.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop a greater depth of understanding of the more complex theories and descriptive frameworks associated with morphology and syntax;
- analyze and study the internal structure of words in English (morphology);
- analyze and study the internal structure and underlying patterns of phrases and clauses in English (syntax).

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply the relevant terminology to a description and analysis of English words and sentences;
- employ formal descriptive and representational frameworks in the study of English at word and sentence level;
- present an objective and rigorous description of aspects of spoken and written English;
- apply the above frameworks to other disciplines in the field, such as atypical speech production, etc.
