DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives students the opportunity to examine English speech and pronunciation patterns. The unit will also look at the communicative nature of such speech patterns, and describe how speakers convey information, both consciously and unconsciously.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims are to:
- Familiarise students with phonological frameworks useful for the study of English speech patterns;
- Sensitise students to the practice and use of describing speech patterns using the relevant methods of representation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify and begin to apply phonological frameworks to the description of English speech patterns;
- Identify fundamental theories of phonology.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appropriately account for given speech patterns within the given descriptive and theoretical frameworks English Phonology.
