DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to improve language competence in English for students of diplomacy. Skills relevant to attaining proficiency in English are targeted, where the main focus is on improving reading skills and strategies, writing, and language use. Students get practice in analysing text and subtext, rephrasing oral/written sources, examining written material and/or documents and summarising written sources, writing reports, employing specialist terminology, and using the appropriate register.

Study-Unit Aims:

- improve cognitive reading skills;
- use appropriate reading strategies for efficient reading;
- infer meaning;
- interpret writer’s attitude and purpose;
- interpret material presented in graphs;
- analyse text and subtext;
- use syntactically correct sentences;
- use the correct grammar forms;
- practise specialist terminology related to diplomatic studies;
- compose reports (related to diplomatic functions);
- summarise written sources;
- use the proper register.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read with understanding, making inferences and discerning purpose of the text and the writer’s opinion;
- write syntactically correct sentences, using the correct grammatical forms;
- use the proper specialist terminology in its appropriate context;
- employ the proper register;
- write summaries and reports.
