DESCRIPTION This course is an analytical inquiry into some special problems of filming post/modern British novels. Two major issues will be considered: whether the literary work’s characterisation filtered through streams of consciousness, temporal/spatial disjunctions and metafictional devices can be reconceived in terms of Never Let Me Go analogous cinematic techniques; and whether figurative imagery can be recreated by means of visual/aural correlatives. The following topics will be analysed in detail:

- Huston’s The Dead: Filming Joyce’s Musical Epiphanies.
- Russell’s Women in Love: A Lawrentian Life/Death Dance.
- À la Recherche of Hartley’s The Go-Between: Temps Perdu for Losey?
- Reisz’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman: Filming Fowles’ Metafiction.
- Appropriating Ondaatje’s Spectral Vision: Minghella’s The English Patient.
- Wright’s Atonement: Adapting McEwan’s Ethics of Fiction.
- Filming Ishiguro’s Aesthetic Soul: Romanek’s Never Let Me Go.
