| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is being offered to first-year engineering students participating in the "Carousel Week". Through this unit, students will be able to join students from partner universities in following a blended-learning activity that will take place in the second semester of their studies. Through this unit, students from each participating university will be able to follow online engineering instruction on a practical application of choice. This will then be followed up by an in-person practical experience at one of the hosting universities, thereby allowing the students to participate in an inter-cultural exchange of ideas and team-work. While at the host country, students will also follow lectures on creativity and creative thinking and will be guided to use the concepts learnt throughout their project work. Students will also discover engineering in the practical work-place through industrial visits, while also participating in cultural experiences in their host country. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to foster creative thinking skills, team work and communication with peers to solve a technical problem. The study-unit also aims to provide students exposure to different cultures and the experience of a short period of studying abroad. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe how engineering works are applied in different industries; - Interpret a technical brief; - Apply creative learning techniques to brainstorm solutions to technical problems; - Design a solution to address an engineering problem. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design, build and test engineering solutions to a given problem; - Communicate with peers from different countries and cultures; - Present their work to others; - Become more independent; - Share cultural experiences. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Lecture notes will be given depending on the projects assigned each year. |
