Study-Unit Description

CODE ENR5103

TITLE Nano and Micro Technologies

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Faculty of Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit first sets definitions for nano and microtechnologies and associated nanomaterials. The necessary tools commonly used to characterize the sub-micro regime are also briefly described with particular attention given to their capabilities. In addition, the student is introduced to several manufacturing techniques capable of producing nano and micro metric features. The underlying chemo-physical phenomena are explained. Several examples of current and near future applications of such materials and technologies are described.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with good working knowledge and understanding of:
- the basic concepts of nanotechnology.
- micro and nano materials properties and processes.
- metrology in the nano scale.
- nanoelectronics.
And hence the skills required to pursue a successful career in this domain.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the characteristics exhibited by micro and nano scale products in the various application areas.
- Develop an understanding of the issues and methods involved in processing at the micro and nano scale level.
- Acquire basic principles in the design and development of products in the micro and nano scale level.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply different and new emerging solutions to engineering problems, taking advantage of the unique properties of nanomaterials.
- Independently select the most appropriate micro-nano manufacturing process required to fabricate a component.
