DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on the first year study-unit EPE1016 English in the Primary Classroom. The study-unit will continue to focus on the various pedagogies used in the teaching of English through language learning activities and lessons related to the various strands of language teaching and learning. The use of text books, ICT and children’s literature in teaching and learning English will be addressed. The role of the teacher as a reader and a role model for reading habits will be explored.

This study-unit also aims to create awareness about the use and availability of good quality children’s literature in primary schools, school libraries, public libraries and also in pupils’ homes. Different genres of children’s literature will be explored, such as: traditional fantasy, modern fantasy, contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, biography, informational books, picture books, and poetry. The role of illustrations in children’s literature shall also feature in this unit.

The student teachers will be expected to become familiar with a range of literary works, authors and illustrators in the sphere of children’s literature.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit intends to:
- continue enhancing the student teachers’ awareness of the role of reading in English language teaching and learning;
- introduce the role of promotive reading for pleasure and teachers as readers;
- create awareness about the central role of reading in the curriculum and daily life;
- familiarise student teachers with various genres of children’s literature, authors and literary works;
- encourage student teachers to integrate good quality childrens’ literature in their lessons and activities; and
- support student teachers to offer learners a positive experience of books and reading.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- create awareness about the use and availability of good quality children’s literature in primary schools, school libraries, classroom libraries / reading corners, public libraries and also in pupils’ homes;
- become more knowledgeable about selecting books that are appropriate for children according to their interests, age and /or ability;
- define children’s literature and various genres;
- raise awareness of the interplay between text and illustration; and
- discuss how their own experiences of reading influence their choices of texts for their primary school learners.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify features of English language learning activities to enhance outcomes for learners in a primary school class;
- create motivating and enjoyable lessons and activities to support children’s learning and language development based on their selection of English texts;
- continue to learn to adapt and modify language teaching materials and resources to be in a position to cater for the individual needs of learners who may require further support or additional challenge; and
- reflect on the composition and contents of a class library and classroom reading areas.
