DESCRIPTION Students will reflect on the relationship among spirituality, religion and morality (ethics). They will analyze and critique the emergent issues, pedagogies and models of Religious Education in contemporary local, as well as in the International scenario . The study-unit will tackle the role of religion in general and the resurgence of spirituality in contemporary society. It will also present the current theories on children's spirituality and children's religious and moral development. The study-unit will equip students with the skills and attitudes that should help them facilitate and foster children's spiritual, moral and religious dimensions.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to help prospective primary educators to understand the centrality of spiritual, religious and moral formation in the holistic development of children. Furthermore it aims to clarify and equip students with the necessary skills to research religious beliefs, rituals and practices. It also aims at equipping educators with those skills necessary to enhance children's spiritual, religious and moral dimension.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the implications of different definitions of religion, morality and spirituality for classroom practice,
- Investigate and critique the role of religion and spirituality in the formation of identity,
- Research and compare various religious education models and pedagogies present in the local and European context,
- Research and appraise current literature on children’s spirituality and spiritual education,
- Demonstrate an understanding of the beliefs, practices and traditions of the three major monotheistic religions (with particular emphasis on Catholic basic beliefs).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Plan and develop suitable interventions to enhance the spiritual, religious and moral dimensions of the child,
- Acquire skills that foster symbol literacy,
- Use different story telling methods including Godly play,
- Apply instructional design principles in the planning and delivery of learning activities.
