TITLE Contemporary European Security

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT European Studies

DESCRIPTION The aim of this course is to give students a secure foundation in the study of security issues and those pertaining to Europe after the end of the Cold War. The course will begin by looking at concepts of security, the Cold War security environment in Europe before moving on to a look at more contemporary issues. In analysing the present day security concerns that face Europe, we will see how changes in our concepts of security and in the actual security environment have caused the principal security actors to re-assess their priorities and strategies. In looking at this transforming environment we will concentrate on NATO and the OSCE, the US and Russia, the security priorities of France, Britain and Germany as well as the impact of the new security environment on neutral states and the regional security of the Mediterranean. We will not deal with the EU's CFSP as this is tackled in a separate credit.

The topics that are to be covered are the following:

1 The Cold War: Security threats, solutions and 1989
2 New security concepts
3 National and Regional Security
4 Proliferation of WMD
5 Terrorism
6 Non-Traditional Security Threats
7 Institutional Adaptation in NATO
8 Institutional Adaptation in the OSCE
9 Security Policy of the Major European Players: France and Germany
10 The Post-Neutrals and Small States
11 The Role of the US and Russia in the 'New Europe'
12 Mediterranean Security
