DESCRIPTION | The study-unit focuses on the economic analysis of trade policy related issues with an emphasis on the European Union. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit has the objective of providing an in-depth understanding of EU trade policy based on theory and evidence. A main goal is to analyse and discuss EU trade policy based on trade-theoretic foundation and the practical application of its trade agreements. The study-unit will provide students with analytical skills to investigate current developments on the EU trade-policy agenda. In this respect, particular focus is placed on the implications of liberalising trade with different trade partners. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe EU’s trade-policy agenda. - Identify causes and effects of inter- and intra-industry trade. - Identify effects of trade agreements with different trade partners. - Explain implications of preferential and multilateral trade liberalisation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss pros and cons of preferential vs. multilateral agreements. - Evaluate arguments in the trade-policy debate. - Analyse developments on the EU trade-policy agenda. - Analyse developments on the WTO agenda. (Main textbook) Various readings including textbook chapters and up-to-date articles and reports (Available at the library, on-line or provided as extracts on VLE). |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | Pre-requisite: Students who do not have an economics background must successfully complete the supplementary study-unit EST1040. Failure in submitting the Seminar Paper or an unjustified absence in the Examination will result in an overall fail. Class attendance is obligatory, as this is a seminar based course and assessment depends on class participation. Should a student miss more than two seminars, the lecturer may refuse to allow the student to sit for the exam. |
