DESCRIPTION The dissertation is the final component of the MA programme, designed to enable the student to utilise the skills and knowledge acquired during the programme of studies to organise and undertake a research project.

Study-unit Aims:

The dissertation aims to enable the student to show that they have acquired the skills to undertake a research project.

That project comprises: identifying an area/s of research; establishing research objectives; locating, organising and critically analysing the authoritative literature as well as the data available; devising a research methodology; compiling the relevant data; answering the original research aims and, possibly, making recommendation for future research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

The knowledge gained will be specific to each research topic.

2. Skills:

Skills acquired relate both to the academic and professional spheres. Through the process of writing the thesis the student will learn to demonstrate the skills to conduct independent and original research as well as identifying research aims, generating research questions, reviewing literature, formulating a research methodology, collecting data, thinking and writing critically as well as producing a coherent and informed piece of work.

These skills can be utilised for further study at the doctoral level or can be used as an intrinsic aspect of the student's professional experience, representing the ability to analyse and critically discuss any topic which might arise as part of their present or future job.
