DESCRIPTION The unit seeks to trace the development of the most important historical, systematic and practical contents of the Roman Catholic understanding of the Church, with reference to issues such as modernity and tradition, and interconfessional and interreligious dialogue. The principles of ecumenism are then studied while highlighting its historical iter, its acquisitions, its ambiguities, its possibilities and its aspirations.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to:
- Provide a presentation on the community founded by Jesus Christ, its characteristics and its challenges;
- Reflect on the Church's relation to society;
- Provide an outline of the birth and growth of the Ecumenical Movement, and how the Catholic Church has responded to the quest for unity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Possess a balanced and intelligent knowledge on the nature of the Church, based on New Testament data and theological thought over the centuries;
- Comprehend the responsibility of the members of the Church as members of the community founded by Christ, and as active members of society;
- Appreciate the great strides made by the Catholic Church and other Churches in order to overcome disunity by engaging themselves in ecumenical dialogue.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Offer convincing arguments about the foundation of the Church and its lasting relevance to convey Christ's message to the world;
- Evaluate maturely the action and mission of the Church over the ages;
- Be conversant about the Copernican revolution brought about by the Second Vatican Council with regard to a new ecclesiological vision;
- Engage him/herself in ecumenical dialogue with other Christians.
