DESCRIPTION The study-unit will introduce the student to concepts of nutritional science that will be applied to practice in the various nutrition fields particularly, in public health, clinical nutrition scenarios and community care.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to consolidate the main principles of food and nutrition and translate to practical general health care recommendations in the population with an emphasis on topical nutrition areas of interest.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the students will be able to

- define and translate the various applications of nutrition and the link between diet and health;
- review and discuss topics which include: aspects of clinical and population health and applied nutrition including nutrition disorders, obesity prevention and management, diet and mental wellbeing; functional foods, polyphenols, dietary supplementation, classifications and health aspects of food products such as highly processed foods;
- describe evidence-based reports and peer-reviewed evidence in nutrition topics of interest.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply current knowledge and nutrition principles to practice;
- calculate energy requirements for specific age groups;
- explore key nutrition techniques and apply them across the life cycle;
- evaluate and synthesise current nutrition science evidence and communicate effectively in scientific reports/assignments.
