DESCRIPTION The study-unit will consolidate information introduced to students in Year 2. The organization and dynamics of Health care interventions in nutrition, dietetics and health promotion will be tackled and discussed.

The roles of both of the food scientist and research nutritionist to provide the backup needed to facilitate intervention will also be tackled.

The diverse and co-competencies required by community, clinical and laboratory scientists will be extensively explored.

The study-unit will consist of a series of lectures which will be followed by group learning sessions in topics that are particularly relevant to the local scene.

Team and network building together with a critical appraisal of public health praxis and examples of practical day-to-day scenarios will be discussed in the participatory group learning sessions.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit builds on study-unit FEH2024 delivered in Year 2 and aims to showcase the style and execution of health care interventions in clinical and community settings. The study-unit aims to offer the student the chance to learn how to design and evaluate events and positively exploit media to promote health.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- evaluate different approaches to Health Promotion and Public Health Nutrition.
- examine the role of nutrition in different stages of the life cycle.
- cite and refer to using official policy documentation (such as and not only):
    - Introduction to Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition Policies, World Declaration on Nutrition, WHO Food and Nutrition Action Plan 2000/2005.
    - General Aspects of Nutrition and Health. Infancy and Pregnancy.
    - Breast feeding and Childhood Nutrition.
    - Adolescence and Adult Nutrition, with emphasis on Mediterranean Diet.
    - Overweight and Diabetes: Behaviour change.
- evaluate concepts of health and approaches to Health Promotion.
- define Nutrition in Public Health.
- plan nutritional intervention studies that assess needs in a community.
- classify nutritional epidemiological studies and their design.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- network, discuss and appraise current practices and plan for future needs.
- use acquired knowledge to compile information needed to deliver, plan review and even propose change policy of services within the nutrition, dietetics and food science environments.
- implement strategically planned dietary goals, dietary guidelines and dietary recommendations to meet the health needs of specific population groups.
- plan, promote and implement educational and marketing messages and resources promoting healthy, local, traditional and easy to prepare foods and dishes.
