DESCRIPTION The study-unit consolidates the various units taken in Nutrition, Dietetics, Health Promotion and Food Science and associate local demographics with dietary choices, life style and health.

This study-unit will also demonstrate practical examples of settings in health promotion, supporters of healthy environments and cities, wellness and community health intervention. Other subject areas (apart from nutrition) and campaigns relevant to health promotion such as alcohol consumption and mental health will also be discussed.

The effect of socioeconomic factors and costings, gender, societal, educational, cultural and ethnic dimensions and their effects on health will be addressed and appraised in the wider context of lifestyle choice.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to investigate further key concepts in health promotion, looking at particular scenarios and settings, facilitators and barriers towards health, diet and disease prevention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise and define the various concepts relating to health, health status, wellness, health promotion and disease prevention and the concepts of health inequality and equity;
- plan health promotion strategies taking into account barriers to preventing disease and promoting health such as socio economic factors, cultural barriers, stigma and bias, political and behavioral factors;
- develop an understanding of the relationship between health, the diet and the environment;
- comprehend the area of advocacy and its importance as a health promotion activity.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand the complexity of dietary behavior, links between the micro and macro environment, and the wider areas of health promotion;
- evaluate health scenarios and campaigns; and
- demonstrate a knowledge and apply health promotion/dietary behavior models as well as basic advocacy concepts.
