| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will present students with a historical overview of French cinema, focusing mostly on the thorny problem of cinematic adaptation of literary texts. Students will become familiarised with the language of film and the theory of adaptation, in order to provide them with adequate tools to analyse film adaptations. Students will also appreciate how each adaptation is shaped by a variety of contextual factors and by the director's interpretations, which explains how one literary text, such as Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary' can give rise to a multitude of cinematic adaptations. A variety of cinematic adaptations from different genres will be studied. Study-Unit Aims: - To equip students with knowledge of the theories of adaptation and the relationship between literature and film; - To develop students' interdisciplinary skills in working with both literature and film; - To familiarize students with selected film adaptations and their sources, and with the history of French cinema. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the key components of film language, and compare them to linguistic and stylistic features in literary texts; - Identify the key theories and debates surrounding cinematic adaptations; - Demonstrate an understanding of the history of French cinema; - Understand the process through which the set texts were adapted into the cinematic medium. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Acquire the critical instruments to analyse films as texts; - Develop a critical appreciation of the process of cinematic adaptation of literary texts.
