DESCRIPTION Language is inseparable from the social reality where it is spoken and evolves, grounded in a History and in a general culture. The aim of the study-unit is to introduce students to the French and Francophone culture through the History of Art, architecture and literature. It will also present French regions and Francophone countries through key events of History.

Language is inseparable from the social reality where it is spoken and where it evolves, grounded in a History and in a general culture. The aim of the study-unit is to introduce students to the French and Francophone culture through the History of Art, architecture and literature. It will also put into a French historical context the main movements of the History of Art, architecture and literature.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To initiate to French and Francophone History of Art, architecture and literature;
- To analyse visual and written contemporary documents which present aspects of the diversity of French and Francophone culture and civilisation;
- To enable the development of critical thinking skills associated with culture and civilisation;
- To help students acquire the ability to recognize the different styles and movements.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Distinguish the different regions of France and the different members of the Francophonie;
- Through an introduction to French and Francophone History of Art, students will acquire an understanding of the specificities of Francophone culture and civilisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the contributions of France to European culture and to situate the origin of those different contributions within France's regions;
- The skills acquired in the introduction to French and Francophone history or art will contribute to a better understanding of the connections and interactions in European and World History of Art;
- Students will improve their skills to think critically about French cultural movements and key moments of French civilisation.
