This study has several objectives: the first part introduces the students to the origins of the French language, the first writings in the vulgar tongue, the chansons de geste, love and adventure poems, satirical and allegorical poetry, the fabliaux, religious and profane dramatic performances, the decadence of the fourteenth century and the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The poet Malherbe is the forerunner of the Classical seventeenth century which also saw the birth of the Académie française and of the literary evenings that took place in the Parisian salons. The Enlightenment brings about the triumph of reason, of the experimental sciences, of philosophical arguments and of revolutionary literature, in spite of a degree of sensibility in literature, precursor of Romanticism.

The second part will give a bird’s eye view of literary movements in France during the 19th and the 20th centuries as they found expression in poetry, narrative and the theatre. History of literature in the last two centuries may also be studied in an interdisciplinary context together with the various types of art and with awareness of new ideas coming into being.
