| DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is firstly to learn how to use comprehensively computer tools in order to undertake a bibliographical research in conformity with French and Francophone typographical norms, especially quotations, footnotes, table of contents and index. Moreover, it will provide students with the functional tools required to pursue a particular research work and find the necessary documentation (databases, dictionaries and online libraries). Secondly, the study-unit focuses on the fundamental methodology in the Social sciences. Epistemological and methodological issues of this type of research will be dealt with, including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research, with their advantages and disadvantages. The structure of a dissertation in linguistics / didactics will be explained. The unit will also deal with the construction and analysis of a linguistic corpus. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide students with the opportunity to use computer tools in order to make a bibliographical research that complies with typographical norms (quote, footnotes, table of content, index); - To give students functional tools to pursue an academic research in French with the help of the Internet (databases, online libraries, dictionaries and encyclopaedias); - To provide the intellectual tools in order to research in Social sciences and languages; - To enable students with the know-how of conducting research in the Social sciences; - To provide students skills in referencing systems for research in the Social Sciences; - To prepare students to structure dissertations according to the norms of research in the Social sciences. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply French academic typographical norms using a word processor; - conduct an academic research using databases and online tools with a computer; - find the accurate academic resources on a given subject in the social sciences in French; - apply referencing according to the norms used in Social sciences research; - select the appropriate method of research for a given topic of investigation in linguistics or didactics. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - improve his/her computer skills in the perspective of academic research; - be proficient using information technologies for scholarly research and will be able to make a fast, efficient and selective survey of the literature available in French on a given academic subject; - Improve the ability to write a paper of a scholarly nature; - structure a dissertation or scholarly article in the field of the Social sciences; - construct and analyse a linguistic or classroom discourse corpus.
