DESCRIPTION This study-unit will give an introduction to the different schools of Family Therapy and how these influenced the development of systemic practice. The study-unit will also include an introduction to different psychological models such as psychoanalysis, behaviourism person-centred therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy. The topics will include the historical development of family therapy which will set the context for the different schools across the development of systemic practice. The genogram will be presented as an important interventive and diagnostic tool.

The individual and family life cycle theory will also be discussed. A number of vignettes will be used to illustrate applications of the concepts of the different schools.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to give students an overview of the main theories of Family therapy and an introduction to the different psychological models. Each lecture will have both a theoretical component as well as some practical work to illustrate better the concepts introduced in that particular theory. This will give students a more holistic understanding of the concepts and their application.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. describe the contribution the different schools of family therapy and where they fit within the chronology of the development of Family therapy;
b. know the basic concepts of Systemic theory;
c. know the main therapeutic techniques developed within each family therapy school.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. will critically appraise the main concepts are applied to practice;
b. will be able to apply the different techniques as applied in practice.
