DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to create a space for exploration of pertinent issues in the food and nutritional sciences, an opportunity for virtual learning, participation in a hands on outreach event in the community as well as structured training in Basic Life Support and Food Handling.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide students with various opportunities to interact and engage with community members while working on a subject specific learning task. It also aims to give students the training to register as Food Handlers', the knowledge and skills required to provide Basic Life Support and the insight necessary to translate scientific information to the community.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Translate scientific information to a public health message;
- Administer Basic Life Support as per the latest guidelines;
- Register as Food Handlers with the Food Safety Commission;
- Plan, organise and engage in an outreach event.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Rapidly identify cardiac arrest, summon appropriate assistance, and initiate life-saving interventions;
- Perform high-quality chest compressions and deliver effective artificial ventilation in an appropriate CPR sequence;
- Use an AED safely and effectively;
- Deliver first aid to an unresponsive person and to a person suffering a foreign-body airway-obstruction (FBAO).
