DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the field of public health and health promotion with an emphasis on diet and nutrition, presenting topics such as the determinants of health, models of health promotion and intervention strategies, international nutrition and health policies that support community well-being. Through this study-unit, students will learn how to apply health promotion theories and principles to real-world situations, look at public health data, and design interventions aimed at improving health outcomes.

Study-Unit Aims:

-To cover the area of health promotion and public health and describe their significance in global and local contexts;
-To present to students the main topical areas in public health nutrition and introduce strategies such as health promotion campaigns;
-To present the main health promotion models, theories and intervention design that address key public health issues such as obesity and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs);
-To cover health policies, and introduce the role of social policy and regulations that impact community and global health, including the role of government and non-governmental organizations in public policy and health promotion.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define and discuss the main models theories and practices of public health, and health promotion approaches through the years;
- Distinguish the main settings in health promotion;
- Describe health promotion strategies and campaigns, concepts and public health challenges such as advocacy, health and nutrition literacy and weight stigma;
- Identify determinants of health, including social, environmental, genetic, and behavioural factors with an emphasis on global health impacts;
- Describe health and social policies that impact community health, and other initiatives in health promotion.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply health promotion models and theories to design interventions that address key public health issues;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of public health initiatives using evidence-based research and case studies;
- Critique public health nutrition initiatives such as reformulation, nudging and taxing of unhealthy foods;
- Interpret public health data, including global health case studies and scenarios.
