DESCRIPTION Community and Residential Services for Older Persons sets social and health care practice with older adults firmly in the context of the new realities of ageing societies. It brings a focus onto the need for novel arrangements of community and residential care for older persons, especially in light of the contemporary organisational trends towards a market culture. At the same time, it throws light on the organisational arrangements of residential care services, offering a comprehensive review of the history of residential care, current provision, and an analysis of future trends.

Study-unit Aims:

- To explain the diversity of community and residential services available to older adults with different levels of dependence;
- To examine the stages of care that an older person in need generally goes through, from home care to community care to residential care;
- To demonstrate the continuity of care that older persons receive following discharge from a hospital, respite care, or convalescence home.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the extent to which an individual is able to contribute to their own service planning and how relevant are available services to older adults' needs;
- Compare between different programmes of community care services that meet the physical, emotional and social needs of dependent older adults still living at home;
- Report the importance of providing intermediate care services to frail older persons so that entry in residential care is prolonged as much as possible;
- Explain the importance that residential care seeks to aid older residents to age actively, successfully and productively;
- Compare the logistic and bureaucratic difficulties that community and residential acre managers face in providing optimum levels of community and residential care respectively.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the dependence status and care needs of frail older persons living in the community;
- List and describe the continuum of social and health care services for older persons in the community;
- Demonstrate critical evaluation skills of social and health care services for older persons in the community;
- Write reports on the aims and objectives of the range of social and health care services for older persons in the community;
- Analyse the extent that older persons in residential are ageing actively, successfully and productively;
- Explain how residential home managers can improve existing care services in their respective residential homes.
