CODE GER1004

TITLE Biological Aspects in Old Age

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Gerontology

DESCRIPTION A series of talks and discussions on aging, its physiological effects on organs systems and the characteristic features and syndromes of illness in old age.

Topics include:
- Biology and theories of Aging.
- Age related changes in body systems.
- Frailty.
- Characteristic features of illness in old age.

Study-unit Aims:

- To demonstrate that, and explain why, older persons can age differently whilst those who are frail and ill require specific assessments and management that differ from younger age groups.
- To compare and analze the various theories of ageing and the evidence for and against each one. To be able to distinguish what is the essential difference between physiology and pathology as applied to the various ageing human body systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- List and analyze the theories of ageing and the physiological changes in organ systems with age and demonstrate how the clinical problems and presentations that may arise are assessed and tackled.
- Explain the various theories of ageing and be able to describe the common features of normal and abnormal ageing.

2. Skills:

This study-unit is primarily knowledge based and students are not taught specific skills. However, they will be taught about the importance of multidimensional and comprehensive geriatric assessments and how they are carried out.
