ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is divided into two parts. The first part introduces and assesses contemporary theories relating to effective public speech. It examines the main categories of critical thinking skills required for researching and delivering speeches, with particular reference to aspects relating to credibility, information gathering, generating ideas, organisation, integrating and evaluating skills, and fielding questions. Using communicative strategies, this study unit includes tutor-led seminars and is specifically designed for Public Speaking. Students make team video presentations on topics of current interest.

The second part of the study-unit shall enable students of diplomacy to gain basic skills in the German language, culture and society. The German language is one of the most important languages spoken in Europe and in the European Union. Knowledge of the language allows access to the German culture as well as its literature and philosophy. German language is also widely used in international organizations and ranks as one of the most frequently used languages on the internet. This study-unit therefore provides intensive training in the German language which will be accompanied by the discovery of the social reality to which this language applies. By using a communicative approach priority is given to oral and written comprehension and oral and written production. During the 2nd semester the objectives of the 1st semester will be pursued and reinforced. It is also planned to enrich the course by visits of German speaking diplomats who will provide the students with interesting information about their working experiences.

The main text and the communicative practice during the lessons will enable the students to understand basics of German grammar, to make use of important phrases in German which are relevant to diplomatic communication and to become acquainted with important political, economical, social and cultural aspects related to Germans and Germany.
