DESCRIPTION The study-unit offers an introduction to literary studies in German. Students will acquire basic tools for analysing literary texts (drama, poetry and prose) by studying short examples of German literature. The study-unit also offers a first introduction to different approaches of literary theory. Furthermore, basic techniques of academic studies in German literature will be practiced (f.i. searching for secondary literature, correct quoting).

As the method of assessment is 'Portfolio', the students are encouraged to develop their own collection of relevant material for German literary studies (in their own words as well as extracts from secondary texts, dictionaries, encyclopedias etc.).

Dieser Kurs ist als Einführung in das literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten konzipiert. Die Studierenden erarbeiten grundlegende Methoden der Analyse von literarischen Texten (Erzähltext- Gedicht- und Dramenanalyse) anhand von kurzen Textbeispielen aus der deutschen Literatur. Der Kurs bietet auch eine Einführung in verschiedene literaturtheoretische Ansätze. Außerdem werden grundlegende Techniken des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens in der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft eingeübt (z.B. Bibliographieren und richtig Zitieren).

The study-unit aims at introducing students to academic literary studies in German. It is designed to provide students with the tools necessary for analysing German literature, and is also a first introduction to writing academic assignments in German literary studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- employ basic methods of literary analysis;
- comprehend the academic field of German literature.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyse literary texts;
- reflect on the field of German literature as an academic discipline;
- employ basic techniques of academic German studies
