Study-Unit Description

CODE GRM1052

TITLE Texte der Deutschen Literatur / German literary texts

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed as an introduction to reading and analysing German literature. Parallel to the ‘Einführung in die Literaturwissenschaft’, it gives students the opportunity to practice understanding literary texts in German – on a linguistic level, but also as aesthetic constructions. Students will discuss the general question of the benefits of reading and studying literary texts in a foreign language, they will put into practice methods of literary analysis, with a focus on more accessible prose texts. Literary texts will also be looked at in their historical context, here the study-unit might focus on the post-1945 period, and could thus for instance introduce the important issue of ‘coming to terms with the past.
