Study-Unit Description

CODE GRM1054

TITLE Einführung in die deutsche Sprachwissenschaft / Introduction to German linguistics

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit participants will be introduced to the main concepts and methods of linguistics, taking modern German as the basis for discussion. What is language? How is language structured? Linguistics is the science of language – but what does it mean to study a language (for example, German) or languages "scientifically"? How does the process of understanding a language work and what happens when we speak? What happens when people 'communicate' with the help of a language?

This study-unit will focus on the following areas of German linguistics, amongst others: semiotics, German phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.

Was ist Sprache?
