DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION The generic term “prose”, having its origin in the ancient “epos”, concerns one of the three main genres of literature, which can be realized in different forms of text. This study-unit will focus on short prose. Short prose, if not already a sub-genre on its own, has become a specific form of literature which includes sketches, epigrams, droll stories and anecdotes as well as short and shortest stories. Masters of short prose in German literature are Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Wolfgang Borchert, Heinrich Böll, Günter Eich, Peter Bichsel, Gabriele Wohmann and Judith Hermann. Whilst deriving from the Anglo-American tradition of short stories after 1945, the German “Kurzgeschichten” have also become commercially more and more successful.

The study-unit will analyze features and forms of short prose texts in German, involving authors and texts (and their interpretation) from the 19th century until today. ach participant will give a brief talk on a chosen aspect of the course topic.
