| DESCRIPTION | Intercultural encounters have gained increasing importance in the globalised world, and at the same time the concept of ‘interculturality’ has become central in many areas of cultural theory. The study-unit will discuss the theory of interculturality, for instance questions such as, whether cultures, especially in the Modern age, are not always ‘inter-cultures’, and it will encourage reflections on cultural stereotypes, problematic notions of cultural superiority, and the question of the relation of cultural identities to political and economic conditions. Yet, the main focus of the study-unit is on developing students’ intercultural competence in relation to German-speaking countries. Possible topics include a discussion of which cultural knowledge is most important when encountering Germany/Austria/Switzerland, of the intercultural elements of language learning and teaching, as well as the question of interculturality within ‘German culture’, for instance migration to German-speaking countries, German society as a multicultural society, interculturality and language contact (e.g. English-German, Turkish-German) etc. Intercultural comparisons with Maltese culture are also especially welcome in this study-unit. Interkulturelle Begegnungen und Erlebnisse sind in der globalisierten Welt von zunehmender Bedeutung, zugleich ist ‚Interkulturalität‘ für viele Bereiche der Kulturwissenschaften zu einem zentralen Begriff geworden. Der Kurs wird die Theorie der Interkulturalität diskutieren, zum Beispiel Fragen wie die nach der ‚inter-kulturellen‘ Beschaffenheit aller Kulturen – zumindest in der Neuzeit, er wird zur Reflexion auf die Bildung kultureller Stereotypen anregen, auf problematische Vorstellungen kultureller Überlegenheit und auf die Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen kulturellen Identitäten und politischen und ökonomischen Bedingungen. Der Schwerpunkt des Kurses aber liegt auf der Entwicklung der interkulturellen Kompetenz der Studierenden in der Begegnung mit den deutschsprachigen Ländern. Mögliche Kursthemen sind unter anderem die Diskussion der Frage, welche Art von kulturellem Wissen bei der Begegnung mit Deutschland, Österreich oder der Schweiz überhaupt wichtig ist, die Frage nach interkulturellen Elementen im Sprachenlehren und -lernen, und auch die Frage nach Interkulturalität innerhalb der ‚deutschen Kultur‘, beispielsweise nach Migration in die deutschsprachigen Länder, nach der deutschen Gesellschaft als einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft sowie nach Interkulturalität und Sprachenkontakt (z.B. Englisch-Deutsch, Türkisch-Deutsch). Interkulturelle Vergleiche mit der maltesischen Kultur sind dabei äußerst willkommen. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit is designed to introduce students to the concept of inculturality and to various uses of this concept in relation to German-speaking countries, with a focus on the relatioship of interculturality and language (learning). Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define the concept of interculturality and reflect critically on it; - analyse aspects of German culture with a focus on intercultural encounters; - reflect on language learning and language contact in relation to interculturality. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate improved intercultural skills; - reflect on their own culture in relation to other cultures.
