TITLE Phonetik und Phonologie des Deutschen / Phonetics and phonology of German

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION Phonetics and phonology are classical branches of structural linguistics. Whereas phonetics examines and describes the physical-physiological prerequisites and the conditions and processes involved in the production of speech sounds, phonology analyzes the value and patterns of these sounds in and for the language system. When we study German phonetics and phonology, we analyze the phenomena and features of speech sound and phonetic values of German, both as a standard language and with respect to dialectal varieties.

At the beginning of this study-unit participants will be introduced to the central aspects of German phonetics and phonology. We shall be looking at the main issues and the methods used in the study of these two branches of linguistics, both diachronically and synchronically. Focussing on topics of applied linguistics, we shall be discussing aspects of phonetics and phonology that are especially relevant and interesting for learners of German as a foreign language. These include, for example, the difference between standard and dialectal pronunciations, the social status of German dialects and the thorny question of a "correct" pronunciation (understood as a specific speech realization of phones that is socially considered as normatively most appropriate). These questions are intrinsically linked to the social “prestige” of a language, involving individual, regional and social variations. We shall be analyzing, furthermore, concrete examples of pronunciation difficulties faced by non-native speakers of German; with the help of exercises participants will be guided in their efforts to improve their German pronunciation.

Each participant will give a brief presentation on a chosen aspect of the course topic.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with an introductory knowledge on phonetics and phonology, two main sub-disciplines of structural linguistics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define the most important theories and methods of Phonetics and Phonology;
- explicate the central academic exponents and frame works of research in German Phonetics and Phonology;
- read and write in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- communicate in German with more awareness of the phenomenon of pronunciation;
- improve his/ her language and research skills;
- assess and analyze the processes of the formation and structuring of a language twofold historically and systematically;
- having learned how to master a longer written study on German literature.
