DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives students the opportunity to study one or more period(s) of German literature in its (their) historical context. The study-unit will also deal with general questions about the relationship between the aesthetic field and historical circumstances during periods of change: in how far has literature attempted to instigate changes? How does it represent and reflect on historical events, turning points or periods of transition? Is literature especially capable of depicting the effects of socio-political change on the lives of individuals?

In how far can art distance itself from socio-political conditions? What is the relationship between fiction and historical facts?
Periods which may be studied include the time around the French Revolution in German literature, the period around 1848 (Vormärz), Modernism, literature after 1945 or around 1989. The study-unit could also concentrate on a thematic focus, such as the question of literature and intercultural change, literature and transformations of the gender discourse, literature and political caesuras etc.
