DESCRIPTION Germany has one of Europe's largest media landscapes and offers various possibilities of accessing information due to the publicistic variety of the printmedia, TV, radio and internet and social media. Despite the strong increase of online newspapers in the last years, the German print market has remained surprisingly stable and still reaches a large readership today. This study-unit will focus on the characterstics of the German media and offers an overview of the main aspects of the media market.

Furthermore, aspects of contemporary culture and society will be discussed. As far as possible recent events and developments will be included. In this context students will be encouraged to develop and voice their own opinions. Therefore the study-unit material will predominantly consist of current articles of newspapers and magazines and possibly of TV recordings.

Deutsche Medien und Tagesthemen
Deutschland hat eine der größten Medienlandschaften Europas und bietet vielfältige Informationsmöglichkeiten durch die publizistische Vielfältigkeit der Printmedien, Fernsehen, Radio und Internet. Trotz der starken Zunahme der Online-Zeitungen blieb der deutsche Printmedienmarkt überraschend stabil und findet auch heute noch Anklang bei einer sehr großen Leserschaft. Dieser Kurs wird sich mit den verschiedenen deutschen Medien beschäftigen und den Teilnehmern einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Aspekte des Medienmarktes verschaffen. Zudem sollen Aspekte unmittelbar zeitgenössischer Kultur und Gesellschaft diskutiert werden. Soweit wie möglich sollen auch die jüngsten Geschehnisse und Entwicklungen einbezogen werden. Hierbei wird auch auf Meinungsäußerung seitens der Studenten wert gelegt. Insofern wird sich der Unterrichtsstoff vor allem aus aktuellen Beiträgen aus Zeitungen und Magazinen und ggf. aus Fernsehaufzeichnungen zusammensetzen.

This study-unit aims to:
- introduce the main aspects of the German media landscape;
- discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society;
- enhance discussion and conversation skills in German.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand certain aspects of the German contemporary culture better;
- know about main aspects of the German media;
- know more words in German.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- contribute to discussions about German contemporary culture;
- speak German more fluently;
- express more complex aspects of German contemporary culture in a better German;
- identify certain aspects specific to the German media landscape.
