DESCRIPTION The German-language media landscape is one of the largest in Europe and offers a broad variety of digital and print media, TV and radio. This study-unit introduces students to different German-language media and provides an overview of the main aspects of the media market, whose role within democratic societies will be reflected on. The language, style, and structure of media contributions will be analysed from a critical perspective. In this context, aspects of contemporary society and topical issues will be discussed in view of media reporting, framing and opinion formation. Students will be encouraged to select their own examples of topics and media relevant to them.

Die deutschsprachige Medienlandschaft ist eine der größten Europas und bietet eine Vielfalt an digitalen und Printmedien, Fernsehen und Radio. Dieser Kurs stellt verschiedene deutschsprachige Medien vor und bietet einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Aspekte des Medienmarktes, auf dessen Rolle innerhalb einer demokratischen Kultur reflektiert wird. Sprache, Stil und Struktur von Medien-Beiträgen werden kritisch analysiert. In diesem Kontext werden Aspekte der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft und aktuelle Themen in Hinblick auf Medienberichterstattung, Framing und Meinungsbildung diskutiert. Die Studierenden werden ermutigt, eigene Beispiele von Themen und Medien auszuwählen, die für sie relevant sind.

- Introduce the main aspects of the German-language media landscape;
- Discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society;
- Enhance discussion and conversation skills in German;
- Enhance critical reading skills and media competence.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Have a better understanding of aspects of German contemporary culture and society;
- Demonstrate knowledge about main aspects of the German-language media;
- Understand more words in German.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Contribute to discussions about German contemporary culture and society;
- Speak German more fluently;
- Express more complex aspects of German contemporary culture;
- Identify aspects specific to the German-language media landscape;
- Discuss topical issues;
- Critically analyse media texts.
