| DESCRIPTION | Sociolinguistics, as a branch of linguistics that is culturally orientated, deals with the relationships between language and society. Both components have to be analyzed by taking into account their reciprocal effects, impacts and dependencies. Language is not just the medium in and by which human beings, as members of specific groups, communities and societies communicate with each other; it is also a window to the individual and collective perceptions and manifestations of identity. Just as a society can have a wide variety of multi-cultural and trans-cultural realities, there are also many ways to express, speak and write about all kinds of topics. From a sociolinguistic perspective, monolingual societies do not exist, as language, being both a social motor and medium, always has various forms – depending on context, use, motivation, demands on communication, social group affiliation, prestige, style and fashion. Whilst focussing on the situation of German, the study-unit will tackle some of the central contextual phenomena of sociolinguistics, such as language and communication, norm and dialect, language policy, language and culture, language and identity, and language and gender. Each participant will give a brief presentation on a chosen aspect of the course topic. Soziolinguistik als Teildisziplin einer kulturell interessierten Sprachwissenschaft befasst sich mit dem Verhältnis von Sprache und Gesellschaft. Beide Komponenten sind im Hinblick auf diese wechselseitige Wirkung wie Abhängigkeit zu analysieren. Generell gefasst, ist Sprache das Medium, in und mit dem Mitglieder einer spezifisch zu definierenden Gesellschaft kommunikativ interagieren. Sprache ist aber mehr als nur bloßes Medium, sie ist auch ein Fenster zur je eigenen und kollektiven Identität und Identitätsversicherung. So vielschichtig eine Gesellschaft in ihren Multi- oder Transkulturalitäten sein kann, so vielschichtig sind die Sprach- und Sprechwéisen in ihr. Strikt monolinguale Sozietäten existieren aus soziolinguistischer Sicht streng genommen nicht, denn Sprache als soziales Movens und Medium kann sehr unterschiedliche Formen annehmen: je nach Kontext, Verwendungszusammenhang, Motivation, Kommunikationserfordernissen, Gruppenzugehörigkeit, Prestige und Mode. Der Kurs wird sich mit ausgewählten zentralen Phänomenen beschäftigen, welche die Soziolinguistik untersucht, zum Beiespiel: Sprache und Kommunikation, Sprache und Dialekt, Sprachwechsel und Sprachpolitik, Sprache und Kultur, Sprache und Identität, Sprache und Gender. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Phänomenen, welche die deutsche Sprache betreffen. Einzelne Aspekte sollen in kürzeren Referaten durch die Teilnehmer/-innen vorgestellt und diskutiert werden. Study-unit Aims: To provide students with a introductory knowledge on the context of language and society, an important approach of linguistics focussing mainly on cultural and sociopolitical questions. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define the most important theories and methods of Sociolinguistics with a focus on German language and society; - explicate the central academic exponents and frame works of research in German Sociolinguistics; - comprehend the differences and similarities of ambiguous entities such as language and culture. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - connect social-historical with political and cultural factors and increase his/ her knowledge of geographical, regional and national topics of Regional Studies in German ("Landeskunde"); - relate the development of language and certain attitudes towards language itself and language varieties to social values, norms and contents of awareness.
