TITLE Syntax und Morphologie des Deutschen / Syntax and morphology of German

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION Syntax and morphology are, alongside phonetics and phonology, the other two primary branches of structural linguistics. Whilst syntax and morphology can also be analyzed in the light of diachronic aspects, such as historical syntax and the phenomenon of language change, this study-unit will focus on systematic-synchronic issues which concern the linguistic system of German.

Syntax describes and analyzes how grammatical sentences are structured and how they can be built out of singular elements such as words, morphemes, graphemes etc. The question "What is a sentence?” implies an answer to the question "What is a word?" As morphology tries to segment and categorize words, a strict distinction between morphology and syntax is difficult, but possible and necessary. By focussing on German, this study unit aims to give sufficient answers to both essential questions.

The study-unit aims in particular at issues which are relevant and interesting for learners of German as a foreign language, such as word composition, word order and language comparison.

Each participant will give a brief presentation on a chosen aspect of the course topic.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with a introductory knowledge on syntax and morphology, two main sub-disciplines of structural linguistics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define the most important theories and methods of German Syntax and Morphology;
- explicate the central academic exponents and frame works of research in German Syntax and Morphology;
- segment and classify structures of words and word orders in German according to the IC analysis and the topological sector interpretation ("topologische Felderanalyse").

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- communicate in German with more awareness of the phenomenon of words and sentences, their structures and orders;
- improve his/ her language and research skills;
- assess and analyze the processes of the formation and structuring of a language twofold historically and systematically;
- having learned how to master a longer written study on German literature.
