Study-Unit Description

CODE GRM3058

TITLE Textanalyse und Textkommunikation / Textual analysis and text communication

LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION Due to the effects of modern – especially visually oriented – mass media many readers appear to be degraded to quick "thoughtless" consumers of written texts. This change of attitude towards reading has been brought about by various developments, especially the increasing importance of the internet.
This phenomenon can be felt even on the level of University students.

Yet a thorough study of texts and a thorough analysis of their contents remains the basis of the study of foreign languages. Only via the techniques of text reading is a recipient put in the position not only to understand the contents but also special allusions, double-meaning, irony, or demagogical purposes. Besides reading techniques this course intends to introduce the tools of a systematic analysis of German prose texts, that is, 'Gebrauchstexte', including e.g. memos, manuals, reports, minutes, references, business letters, newspaper articles, but also excerpts of novels, short stories etc.
