| DESCRIPTION | The third study-unit on translation focuses on translating different types of texts (literary texts among others) into the respective other language (German – English and/or Maltese). Particular issues of translating between these languages will be discussed and reflection on translation choices will be fostered. Possible topics include translating concepts, phrases, syntactic differences and culturally specific notions. Furthermore, the aim of this study-unit is to enhance the students’ language skills with respect to relevant topics of everyday life and current issues, especially in spoken German. This study-unit is designed to help students widen their vocabulary and idiomatic use of German. Der dritte Kurs zum Thema Übersetzung beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen Textsorten (u.a. literarischen Texten), die in die jeweils andere Sprache übersetzt werden (Deutsch – Englisch und/oder Maltesisch). Besondere Probleme des Übersetzens zwischen diesen Sprachen werden diskutiert und die Reflexion auf Übersetzungsentscheidungen wird angeregt. Mögliche Themen sind die Übersetzung von Begriffen, Redewendungen, syntaktischen Unterschieden und kulturell spezifischen Konzepten. Zudem ist es Ziel dieser Veranstaltung, die Sprachfertigkeiten der Studierenden in Hinblick auf relevante Themen des Alltagslebens und aktuelle Fragen zu erweitern, vor allem im gesprochenen Deutsch. Diese Veranstaltung soll den Studierenden helfen, ihren Wortschatz und ihren idiomatischen Sprachgebrauch zu verbessern. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to assist students in: - learning how to translate more complex texts into the respective other language; - amplifying their vocabulary in German; - practicing conversation skills in German; - enhancing their oral expression in German. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand complex texts in German; - understand more German words; - identify complex structures of the German language; - follow complex conversations in German. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - make use of a wider vocabulary; - translate complex texts into the respective other language; - reflect on specific issues of translating between German and English/Maltese; - speak more fluently and idiomatically in German; - make use of more complex linguistic structures.
