The study-unit offers training for academic research based on a reflection on methods and approaches in the subject of German Studies. It further develops knowledge about research, the specific methods of the subject and particular features of academic writing. It focuses on various aspects of academic research, ranging from finding an appropriate and relevant research question, conducting a thorough bibliographical search to structuring, organising and writing a Masters Dissertation. Special emphasis is placed on different methods of analysis and the various perspectives and approaches in academic discourse. Finally, the study-unit offers a discussion of the specific traits of academic discourse. This aims at a theoretical reflection of one’s own methods and argumentative strategies. A reflection on and training in the ‚language game’ of academic discourse is designed to facilitate the students’ own academic research and writing.
