DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the social construction and meaning of gender in society, by considering the cultural context and the intersection with other social identities such as class, religion and ethnicity. The study-unit is structured in order to incorporate gender into intercultural competences.

The first part of the study-unit provides an introduction to the main feminist theories and key concepts on gender, gender identity, sexuality and power. During this phase, students will acquire relevant theoretical knowledge in the field of gender studies.

The second part of this study-unit focuses on the local context in relation to gender and contemporary issues (including gender based violence). The theoretical knowledge discussed during the first part of the module, will enable the students to critically understand and address contemporary gender issues.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce feminist theories and key concepts and terminology related to gender, gender identity and sexuality.
- To raise awareness on the impact of gender stereotypes in intercultural context.
- To highlight the role of culture in shaping and constructing notions of gender and gender roles.
- To explore the concept of intersectionality in relation to unequal power distribution within society

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss prevailing gender theories and key concepts;
- Discuss how gender roles and gender stereotypes vary over time and
cross-culturally;
- Critically analyse and understand contemporary gender issues and their implications for cultural mediation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Address gender issues throughout the mediation process;
- Recognise gender stereotypes and adjust the mediation process accordingly;
- Write an assignment with an analytically strong argument;
- Enhance gender equality through intercultural dialogue.
