DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of a presentation, in which the student presents the aim and rationale of his/her research project, available studies from the literature, results achieved so far and future work within the programme. The audience consists of the Panel of Supervision, members of the academic staff, students of the department and other invited guests. At the end of the presentation the student is expected to answer questions from the audience.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this unit is to help students:
- understand the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study;
- understand the methods used in research;
- be able to communicate effectively with an audience, his/her ideas and results from the research project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- provide a thorough and clear explanation of his/her research topic;
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study;
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of available research methods.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- synthesise the relevant literature, data and results of his project in a clear and effective way, using a power-point presentation or other accepted means;
- communicate his/her results to a mixed audience, with confidence;
- give a concise account of his area of research and proposed continuation.
