| DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit, students will explore several themes pertaining to Second Temple Judaism through personal study. Students will be given a detailed bibliography and they are expected to do a lot of reading and research under the guidance of the study-unit's coordinator. Throughout the duration of the study-unit, students will write a number of essays, addressing different topics, in which they have to illustrate a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Study-Unit Aims: - To introduce students to the history of Judaism in the Second Temple Period, to several facets of Jewish life, and to ancient Jewish literature; - To introduce students to critical methodological issues pertaining to the study the Second Temple Period; - To train students become critical thinkers and adopt a critical approach to primary and secondary sources in the field of Jewish Studies; - To train students develop the necessary skills to write a sustained piece of work, according to the established criteria of academic writing. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - recall basic knowledge regarding the history of the Second Temple Period and Second Temple Judaism; - critically evaluate primary and secondary sources pertinent to this field of studies; - synthesize and discuss a large body of data in order to answer synoptic-style questions; - appraise specific aspects of ancient Judaism and the wider world it inhabited. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - make a close reading of texts, whether they are ancient or modern; - solve problems through a process involving the application of creative and critical thinking, a process which they can implement in various other contexts; - write more clearly and precisely in jargon free language; - discuss and argue various themes in a critical and intelligent manner, as well as develop their own original perspectives. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: A detailed bibliography will be given to the students. This will be structured according to the various themes that they will be researching. |
