It will also provide the learners with the necessary knowledge to select and apply the appropriate products for the attainment of the best results. It will also prepare the learners to recognise skin diseases and product contra-indications, and to acquire competence in the application of different depilatory techniques. Aspects of assessment related to these areas will be explored throughout the study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to enable prospective Hairdressing and Beauty teachers to learn the various effective teaching and learning methods as well as have the skills and competences that reliably lead to achievement by secondary school learners of the learning outcomes set for the curricular area. In the process students will consolidate their knowledge of the Anatomy and Physiology of the hair, skin disease and contra-indications related to depilatory treatment, different depilatory treatment techniques, different factors to be considered and techniques used before and during cutting and blow-drying hair and the application of different depilatory treatment techniques.

- Critically compare pedagogical tools used to engage and enable Secondary school learners when focusing on the types and function of the skin, skin diseases, use of different depilatory treatment, and different factors and techniques used before and during cutting and blow-drying hair.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use a blended approach to teaching and learning methods, whereby the teacher is a 'coach', moving away from formal teaching and learning methods to experiential learning and scaffolded knowledge;
- Guide and supervise young students in the safe and effective use of different hair and beauty care equipment and procedures;
- Assess students in relation to different skin types and functions, recognition of skin diseases, different depilatory treatments, and decisions and practices related to cutting and blow-drying hair.
