DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides a critique of the meaning of dress to different individuals in society. Dress is a means of communication and personal expression, and the Unit explores the social, psychological, and cultural aspects of dress and appearance, including the relationship of dress to different environments, aesthetic and personal expression, cultural ideals and values. Furthermore, it also analyses the way dress is influenced by political, economic and social settings of the time.

Various sources of information on dress from a wide range of disciplines are also explored during the unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at introducing students to a critical analysis of the way dress represents a means of communication. It will prompt students to explore the role of dress as a social and cultural phenomenon. The study-unit also aims to get students to investigate and reflect on the way dress is influenced by political, economic and social settings of the time.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define through a consent-seeking exercise the term 'dress';
- Identify the meanings of dress as a means of communication;
- Analyse the way dress varies in different societies and cultures;
- Describe the ways how people express their affinities and conflicts in different cultures through clothing;
- Outline the relation of dress with specific physical and social environments;
- Explore how dress can alter or enhance the form of the physical body to meet personal or cultural needs;
- Analyse the differences and similarities between costume and everyday dress.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Present arguments in a debate on how meanings are generated and communicated through the way people dress;
- Write a structured essay, evaluating the social, psychological, and cultural aspects of dress and appearance, including the relationship of dress to different environments, aesthetic and personal expression.
