DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce students to a variety of research methods and tools which are often adopted in Home Economics research initiatives and projects. The rationale, ethical aspects and basic procedures will be outlined and discussed. The study-unit will also offer students practical guidance for developing and implementing effective public presentations. It will look at types of speeches, and multiple factors to consider when planning and delivering Home Economics-related speeches. Students will have opportunities to apply and practise skills learnt in simulated and real life settings.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to introduce students to basic research skills and offer practical guidance on how to apply them in tasks with different purposes. It will also describe features of effective public speaking in scenarios often experienced by Home Economists and allow students to plan, deliver and evaluate effective speeches.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the basic principles, purposes and types of research
- Outline and discuss the more common research methods and research tools used in different research initiatives and projects with different purposes
- Explain the general steps involved in a research process
- Explore ethical and logistical considerations in research decisions
- Outline features and processes which will facilitate an effective public presentation to suit different circumstances, based on critical analyses of different situations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Plan and conduct a mini-research project in a small group
- Apply their knowledge in the development of research tools for a particular research project
- Practise different presentation skills in a simulated scenario
- Plan and deliver an effective presentation in an authentic public setting
- Critically assess her/his public presentation based on different criteria.
